After three nights in Edinburgh and three lovingly packaged gourmet breakfast packages from Travelodge, we leave the city northwards in a rental car. Having lived in New Zealand before, at least I have experience with legal traffic. It’s still nerve wracking.
When crossing the “Firth of Forth” the famous Forth Bridge appears on the right. After its completion in 1919, it was the bridge with the longest span in the world with a length of 2.5 km for almost 30 years.
The Falkirk Wheel is a boat lift in the shape of a Ferris wheel and is unique in the world. With a total height of 35 meters, the colossus rises impressively in front of the viewer. The construction, which is as simple as it is ingenious, makes use of Archimedes’ principle:
the boats displace exactly as much water as they weigh themselves. The hoist works with minimal energy consumption.
