The Sufis withdrew to this place many centuries ago to have their peace. The Blagaj Monastery is located at the foot of a steep mountain by a cave from which a river leads into the open.
But the calm was over when the word “tourism” made it into the dictionary.
A modest entrance fee is charged at the gate of the monastery and there are more restaurants along the river bank than Sufis in the monastery.
Of course, we find that scandalous and punish the restaurant that is closest to the holy place with our presence. A wonderful meal, good wine and the most beautiful view of this place, which has already been abandoned by tourists, cannot make the desecration of the place forget.
In the small town of Jasna we find a place to stay for the night. The family uses a house on their farm as accommodation.
We get delicious wine and spend a few hours talking to our hosts on the warm summer night. This gives us the chance to learn a little more about the messy situation in the country where the Bosnians are only a small part of their country, which is otherwise Croatian and Serbian.
Lesson on Bosnia & Herzegovina: Minority in your own country
People who live in Herzegovina refer to themselves as Croatians, even if they no longer have any relatives in Croatia. The same applies to Serbs, who even call the autonomous Republic of Srpska their territory in Bosnia. During the Yugoslav war, Serbia and Croatia wanted to cut their cultural slices of the cake from Bosnia. But that’s only a small part of the big story. Bosnians and Croats also fought against Serbs, but every other constellation also existed through the war. It was also a religious war because the Bosniaks are Muslim and the others are Christians. The Christians are, of course, Orthodox, but also Catholic. The multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia broke up after the death of the dictator Tito and one country after the other declared its autonomy, but with the maximum possible advantages for themselves. In the end, nobody got what they wanted, but there were millions of dead people and even today whole areas are inaccessible because the positions of the landmines are no longer known.
The young man at the table explains to us a Croatian flag with a symbol that we often see in southern Bosnia. A declared aim of the movement with this flag is the annexation of this part to Croatia.
Thousands of dead are due to this movement during the war.
Wir finden das natürlich auch skandalös und bestrafen das Lokal, das am nächsten zu dem heiligen Ort liegt, mit unserer Anwesenheit. Ein herrliches Essen, guter Wein und die schönste Aussicht an diesem von Touristen schon verlassenen Ort können diese Schändung des Ortes nicht vergessen machen.
Im kleinen Ort Jasna finden wir eine Bleibe für die Nacht. Die Familie nutzt ein Haus ihres Hofes als Unterkunft.
Wir bekommen leckeren Wein und verbringen noch einige Stunden in der warmen Sommernacht im Gespräch mit unseren Gastgebern. Wir haben dadurch die Chance etwas mehr über die verfahrene Lage im Land zu erfahren, in dem die Bosnier nur ein kleiner Teil ihres Landes sind, das sich sonst noch kroatische und serbische Lager sein.
Lektion über Bosnien & Herzegowina: Minderheit im eigenen Land
Menschen, die in Herzegowina leben, bezeichnen sich als Kroaten, auch wenn sie schon gar keine Verwandtschaft mehr in Kroatien haben. Dasselbe gilt für Serben, die sogar in Bosnien die autonome Republik Srpska ihr Territorium nennen. Im Jugoslawienkrieg wollten Serbien und Kroatien sich ihre kulturellen Scheiben des Kuchens aus Bosnien abschneiden. Aber das ist nur ein kleiner Teil der großen Geschichte. Bosnier und Kroaten kämpften auch gegen Serben, jede andere Konstellation existierte aber ebenfalls durch den Krieg hinweg. Es war auch ein Glaubenskrieg, denn die Bosniaken sind Muslime und die anderen sind Christen. Die Christen sind allerdings orthodox, aber auch katholisch. Der Vielvölkerstaat Jugoslawien war nach dem Tod des Diktators Tito zerbrochen und ein Land nach dem anderen erklärte seine Autonomie, allerdings mit den maximal möglichen Vorteilen für sich. Am Ende bekam niemand, was er wollte, dafür gab es aber Millionen tote Menschen und noch bis heute sind ganze Landstriche unbetretbar, da man die Positionen der Landminen nicht mehr weiß.
Der junge Mann am Tisch erklärt uns eine kroatische Flagge mit einem Symbol, die wir häufig im Süden Bosniens sehen. Ein erklärtes Ziel der Bewegung mit dieser Flagge ist die Angliederung dieses Teils an Kroatien.
Tausende Tote gehen auf das Konto dieser Bewegung im Krieg.
