Diary Entry

The sun finally comes out from behind the clouds and it suddenly gets downright hot. While I got wet before, the sun is now drying my bike and me again. It’s lunchtime and I’m hungry. It’s a good thing that the canton capital of Solothurn is right in front of me on my journey through Switzerland.

I drive into town and park the Tiger at the town gate. I leave my motorcycle clothing with the machine. Then I enter the old town, armed with my camera.

The city of Solothurn

Solothurn, also known as the “most beautiful baroque city in Switzerland“, is an idyllic city in the north-west of the country.

Solothurn’s history dates back to Roman times, but the city gained prominence in the Middle Ages when it became a major trading center and a member of the Old Confederation. During the Reformation in the 16th century, the city played a crucial role as a center of Catholic resistance in predominantly Protestant Switzerland.

The eventful history of the city is reflected today in its well-preserved historic buildings and narrow streets.

Solothurn offers a variety of sights that take visitors back in time. Probably the most famous landmark is the “St. Ursen-Kathedrale“, an impressive example of baroque architecture with a magnificent facade and ornate stucco work on the inside. The “Baseltor”, the last surviving city gate, is another impressive relic of the past.

Solothurn is not only characterized by baroque beauty, but also lies in picturesque surroundings. The city is crossed by the Aare, a tranquil river that provides an idyllic setting for walks and relaxation. The surrounding nature invites you to outdoor activities and offers a harmonious contrast to the baroque splendor of the city.

I stroll through the city and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s Saturday and the shopping streets are packed. I also have a longer drive today, so there is no time for my street photography.

I decide to go to a bistro on the banks of the Aare. I find the last free table.

I am happy about a Rivella. That’s typically Switzerland for me, even if I don’t see any mountains. A baguette and a herbal lemonade later, I’m back on my feet and doing my rounds through the city center.

Then I saddle the Tiger again and we continue. After Solothurn it’s finally up into the mountains. I want to pitch my tent over the French border, but due to the weekend, all suitable places are full of people. I try some places, but there are too many people. In the end it’s no longer worth pitching my tent and I drive straight home. It was a fantastic few days alone with my motorbike, my tent and a red wine here and there.
