My Travel Diaries of

Uganda

Summary

Currency: Uganda Shilling (UGS)
Capital: Kampala

Drink like a local: Beer (Club, Nile, Tusker)

Special facts:

  • People in Uganda are crazy about the Premier League. Almost every house with electricity has a television showing a current broadcast or replay of a match from the English football league.
  • There are 65 tribes in Uganda and everyone in the country will tell you which tribe he or she comes from and what is special about that tribe.
  • Uganda is a major tea producer.
  • Uganda is a landlocked country, but Lake Victoria is so large that the country has many wide beaches.
  • The country is widely called the “Pearl of Africa“.

Language

Uganda is not a particularly large country, but it is home to 65 tribes who speak different languages. In the region around Kampala, people speak Luganda, and so do most of the Ugandans I meet. In the west of the country, I meet Toro and am even given the local name “Araali“.

  • Good morning – wasuze otya
  • Good evening – sula bulungi
  • Hello (sir) – oli otya ssebo
  • Hello (lady) – oli otya nyabo
  • How are you? – oli otya?
  • Thank you – weebaleΒ
  • White man/woman – muzungu

Food

I had few expectations – and was surprised! The food in Uganda is very tasty and no problem for vegetarians either. However, cutlery is rare and frowned upon. Often there is a sticky mass of beans or rice that you form into balls and use to pick up one of the side dishes or dip it in sauce. Sometimes there is meat in the form of chicken or beef, but the beef is tough.

My Lesson:

Uganda has a big heart

Travel Diaries

Uganda is an exciting country for someone who wants to get to know Africa individually and does not care about expensive hotels, but still travels in a region that is relatively safe. In my experience, the country is very beautiful and the people are very friendly.

The food is also very good – apart from the beef, which is often tough.

The nature is breathtaking and offers many opportunities to marvel.
