Monasteries and Cross-Stones

Diary Entry

The sun temple of Garni

We continue to Garni to visit a sun temple there. This was built by a king in the style of ancient Greek architecture and

was surprisingly the biggest tourist magnet in the country. That’s why we don’t stay long.

Geghard Monastery

We continue to Geghard Monastery, which nestles idyllically at the end of a valley and has been partially cut into the stone.

You can drink from a holy spring in the monastery. We also taste the Armenian bread. The thin flat cakes are called lavash.

Everywhere on the way we see the famous cross stones. Only in Armenia can you find these elaborate relics, but there they seem to line every street.

In your own language these stones are called “Khachkar“.
