A Pilgrimage on Japan’s Kumano Kodo


I had to go to Japan for work reasons. To be honest, despite my passion for travel, the country wasn’t high on my list of priorities. As always, I already had an opinion about many things, even though I had never been there. I thought the country was overpopulated and I didn’t have much to do with manga and sushi. Of course, that’s complete nonsense, as the trip there taught me once again.

If I’m going to Japan, I want to see the country. When I was researching images, I found a stunning picture of a bright red pagoda in front of a waterfall. I had to go there. When I did further research, I learned that this building is Nachi Taicha and that a pilgrimage route, the Kumano Kodo, begins there. A hike through Japan? Why not! Although I’m not a spiritual person, this hike gave me a clarity of mind that I had never experienced before.
