My Travel Diaries of

Laos

Summary

Währung: Laotischer Kip (LAK)
Hauptstadt: Vientiane

Trinken wie ein Einheimischer: Lao Lao (Reiswhiskey)

Special facts:

  • Laos was historically known as “Lang Xang, which means “land of a million elephants“.
  • The Khone Falls in southern Laos are the widest waterfalls in the world, stretching over 10 kilometers.
  • In Laos, there is an archaeological site called the Plain of Jars, which consists of over 2,100 large stone jars whose origin and purpose are still a mystery.
  • Laos has a deep-rooted Buddhist culture, and many boys traditionally become novice monks for a period of time.
  • Laos is the most heavily bombed country in history: more bombs were dropped on Laos during the Vietnam War than during the entire Second World War – even though Laos was not even a party to the war.

My lesson:

Laos is a relaxed country full of relaxed people

Travel Diaries

I get to know Laos on a trip through the former countries of Indochina. I can’t really imagine what the country is like, as it never makes the news. Once I’m there, I realize why.

The country is sleepy in a very positive way. There are few big cities and the people are very relaxed. With no access to the sea, Laos consists mainly of jungle, rivers and Buddhist temples.
